No sooner had Jason Bay hit the go-ahead two-run home run last night than Chip Caray, the TBS lead announcer, said "Manny who?," turning a wonderful postseason moment into a cringe-worthy incident.
For the love of god, no self-respecting Red Sox fan would ever diss the past contributions of Manny Ramirez. Not only was Caray’s comment lame and tired, but it demonstrated the biggest problem with postseason baseball announcers: They ape the instincts and reactions of the worst bandwagon fans.
It’s unfortunate, because Caray and Buck Martinez have called several Red Sox games on TBS this season. Given that, you’d think the commentators would be familiar with the team. So how do you explain Martinez’s comment that Ortiz has been struggling lately?
In the third inning, Big Papi came up with two men on and two men out. He popped out to shallow left, prompting Martinez to say he’s struggling, due in large part to his lingering wrist injury. Struggling? Really?
In the last 14 days, Ortiz is hitting .290 with 4 home runs and a 1.127 OPS.
If that indicates a player who’s struggling, well, struggle on, Big Papi.

In general, I like TBS announcers better than Fox or ESPN announcers. They can’t be perfect, however, and Chip didn’t do a good job last night.
What the hell was Chip talking about when he said Pedroia was “the little pony,” and it was a well known nickname?
“In general, I like TBS announcers better than Fox or ESPN announcers.” I guess I agree, Mr. Pinto, but then… the ESPN and Fox guys are horrendously, terribly awful. So that’s not saying much. But anything… ANYTHING… is better than Tim McCarver.
[shudder]
The conceit that Manny meant that little to us is insulting and ignorant. I think Bay is great, and hope to see him here next year, but his couple of months do not replace the years we had with the (sometimes crazy) Manny.
and it got off to an ominous beginning when caray misjudged Ellsbury’s lead off double by 75 feet.
but my highlight was when martinez spent five minutes talking about how essential it was to win game 1 as tbs flashed a graphic that, for the al at least, proved otherwise.
overall, i didn’t mind martinez as much. thought he gave some decent insight on pitch locations and other catcherly things
um im a die hard …and i said MANNY WHO. people here are glad manny is gone…
give us don orsillo for the red sox games…why wouldnt they give us someone who KNOWS THE TEAM
hahaha…I was thinking the very same thing when they said that. He sounded absolutely lame. Uuuummm, Justin? I’m a Sox fan, and Yes I am glad Manny’s gone. He’s smashing in LA, not to mention happy. Love watching every game the Dodgers play now!
I know I am a little late jumping in here but I don’t think he was saying Bay was better then Manny. Manny wanted out of Boston half way through the season. That is Lame. He quit on his team and will do it again. The “Manny Who?” reference was to the fact that the Red Sox do not need Manny to win. I would say that comment was right on.
Is that Don Ursillo also announcing the White Sox games? Sounds too familiar but I don’t expect to hear him announcing any other games but Red Sox ones.
I don’t even get TBS on my TV. Why is MLB putting ALCS on second rate cable channel on one cares about? This is one reason for NFL success. I can’t watch ALCS but will happily wait to Sunday night to watch my Pats on a real channel available to all. Some people can’t afford to pay for extra crap cable channels.
I can’t stand these announcers.
1. They are wrong in pronouncing our beloved Red Sox names. God that urks me.
2. I can’t stand this announcer because he keeps saying stuff like “the little man (pedroia)…..” Yeah I’m sure he wants to be referred to as that or “150 lbs soaking wet…” I think his performance has silenced comments of his
height.
3. And yes, they are cheesy and corny.
I miss Don and Jerry.
Chip caray sucks, and should be removed for game 7. He has an orgasm every time the ball is touched, then roots for the Rays for the series. He also called the Rays the Victors in 6th inning of game 5, and then their match up with the Phillies in world series, and then had to be reminded by Martinez that there was more innings to go. No wonder they lose ratings. It’s been so bad that a lot of friends and family of mine, and local bars, are turning sound down and watching with radio broadcast. Much better.
I like Both teams a lot, But i don’t think there should be biased reporting on a national broadcast of a championship series.
Once again Game 7 and I can’t stand this announcer. Chip? Every comment on Pedroia is about how he’s this feisty little horse skipping around the bases!!! I can’t stand him. I know announcers are ‘SUPPOSED” to be unbiased but you can hear it. This guy is a Tampa Bay Fan. (or at least doesn’t like the Sox)
Down 6-0, a homerun by the Rays and this guy screams like he should’ve when Drew hit his homerun to close the gap. There was silence after his HR. No excitement from him.
Tonight, sounds so happy about the Rays strikeouts and not Lester. Ok ok, Lester had Cancer, move on with those comments, Lester is ready and we love him but focus on the game. (or get some more research)
Can’t stand these guys. (almost a hr and this announcer loves it)
Screw TBS, any real Sox fan would know, it’s not “very funny.”
Plus no more Frank TV commercials.
Yeah, a little vent here..
