Manny math: Tick off a ‘Nation’ to get back at, what, four people?
Sunday, August 10, 2008 at 10:27 am ET

I hope Ramirez signs with the Yankees. He's just what they need.Despite the contentious way he left Boston, Manny Ramirez said he had nothing but love for Red Sox fans. It was a respectful nod to a fan base whose support for him was more or less constant, at least until it became obvious that Ramirez — jogging to first in 5.7 seconds during a no-hit bid, etc. — was more concerned with getting traded than playing the game respectfully. Still, our good memories of him will always outweigh the bad, no?

Unless, of course, he signs with the freaking Yankees next year.

Seriously, does anyone care about Johnny Damon anymore? He could get hit by a bus and I wouldn’t shed a single tear. Harsh? Perhaps, but he started it — by signing with the Yankees. According to a story by George King of the New York Post, Ramirez would consider doing the same thing after this season. Why? To "get back at the Red Sox."

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Having successfully orchestrated his divorce from Boston and his landing in with the Dodgers, Manny Ramirez would like to make life miserable for the Red Sox during the next few seasons. According to people who have spoken to the eccentric outfielder since he was dealt to L.A. on July 31, Ramirez wants to sign a free-agent deal with the New York Yankees this offseason and get 19 chances a year to punish Boston.

"He wants to play for the Yankees so he can get at the Red Sox," a close friend of Ramirez’s told The Post.

First off, whose life is he hoping to make miserable? John Henry’s? Theo Epstein’s? Tom Werner’s? Larry Lucchino’s? That’s great. Problem is, the people whose lives he’d really be affecting are Red Sox fans. Ya know, the ones who supported him for the last eight years. The ones who looked forward to his Hall of Fame speech. The ones who turned a blind eye to his eccentricities (and sometimes embraced them), all because he could hit a baseball extremely well. And now he wants to stick it to us by signing with the Yankees?

Brilliant. Go ahead and do it, Manny. God knows the Yankees could use another aging DH-type with questionable fielding skills.

I can’t get worried about Manny going to the Yankees. It is frustrating because even if Manny were to sign with the Marlins or really any other team besides the Yankees, the Nation could turn a blind eye, but if he signs with the empire, it’s all over my friend. No more, Manny being Manny love from us, it would be bed time for the Manny fans in Red Sox Nation.

Go nuts, Manny. Maybe he can cut off Damon’s throws again?

Who cares? If the Yankees are stupid enough to pay him, good luck. Have fun dealing with him when he doesn’t want to play after giving him 25 million a year.

I think they only people who care about Manny know are pink hats and those were the same dopes who cared about Damon when he left.

I agree. I can’t believe that the Yankees would sign him to add to the long list of 35+ DH types that cant play the field. You could argue that they could be stupid enough to sign him for those 19 games against the Sox every year as they are always important, but it seems unlikely they would give a monster deal to Manny for 19-games.

Jason, isn’t that why they signed Randy Johnson? I think with Hank in charge - anything is possible!
