The Poll Position MLB trade deadline extravaganza wraps up today with five of the most random deadline deals of the last 20 years.
July 29, 1988: Red Sox trade Curt Schilling, Brady Anderson and a set of sideburns to be named later to Baltimore for Mike Boddicker
Boddicker went 7-3 with a 2.43 ERA down the stretch for the Sox in 1988 and then racked up 32 over his next two seasons in Boston. The Sox won the pennant in two of the three years he was in the rotation.
Anderson had one great year and took enough steroids to kill a Monique.
As for Schill, I think it’s fair to say that the Sox eventually got more than they could have ever imagined from the big guy.
Eight years ago, you would’ve said Boston got the puny end of this trade wishbone, but all things considered, it turned out pretty well.
July 26, 1999: Red Sox trade Robert Ramsay to the Mariners for Butch Huskey
Remember when Huskey came aboard, had a couple big hits in his debut and then launched two mammoth homers the next day? Well, that was about all Butch had to offer in his half season with the Sox.
He was out of baseball by 2001, although he does have the distinction of being the only player in Major League history (probably) who’s first AND last name is a derogatory term for a member of female species.
July 27, 2000: Red Sox trade Brian Rose, John Wasdin, Jeff Taglienti and Jeff Frye to the Rockies for Uncle Rolando Arrojo, Rick Croushore and Mike Lansing
Ummm…what? I just tried to evaluate this deal and my brain punch me in the face. What do we make of this? Who got the better deal?
Uncle Rolando was fun for unintentional comedy purposes. Lansing was one of the least likable human beings in all of Boston for two years. Brian Rose was a monumental bust. John Wasdin’s a joke and Jeff Frye is, well, Jeff Frye.
Let’s just forget it. I think the Sox and Rocks swapped a list of untouchable players on this one, put the rest of the guys in a hat and picked out seven random names. There’s no other explanation.
August 31, 2000: Red Sox trade Chris Reitsma and John Curtice to the Reds for Dante "The Original Shrek" Bichette
Bichette was less than a year removed from a 34-homer season when he came to the Sox but only hit 17 long balls over his season and change in Boston. Although to his credit, those 17 homers traveled a combined 35 miles.
Reitsma actually had a relatively solid career as a starter and reliever. He’s also Canadian.
July 30, 2005: Red Sox trade Kenny Perez and Kyle Bono to the Diamondbacks for Jose Cruz Jr.
This is here because I have absolutely no recollection of Cruz Jr., playing for the Sox. Granted he was only here for four games, but still, this is Jose Cruz Jr.!—probably one of the five most hyped prospects of the entire 1990s.
The Mariners were absolutely insane for trading Cruz for Mike Timlin and Paul Spoljaric back in ‘97. Or at least we all thought. At the time it seemed like one of those deals you’d make in MVP Baseball where you’d just keep rotating a pu pu player of relievers into the trade evaluator until the contracts even out and you could land a sick player. Turns out joke was on everyone. Cruz didn’t hasn’t had a bad career (he’s got 204 career dongs) but he certainly isn’t the dude everyone though he was. And apparently the Mariners knew that right away.
So which is your favorite Random Red Sox Deadline Deal?
