Pioli Named Kansas City Head Of Football Operations
Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 11:35 pm ET

Former New England Patriots VP of Player Personnel Scott Pioli has decided to accept an offer to become the Kansas City Chiefs Head of Football Operations. Numerous reports today indicated that Pioli had finally reached an agreement with the Chiefs, and will leave the Patriots organization as soon as this week. The Chiefs confirmed the reports later this afternoon.

In what has become little surprise, other teams around the NFL covet the success New England has achieved this decade.  The Chiefs needed a new head man after long time GM Carl Peterson retired earlier this month.  Pioli, while not having all of the same responsiblities as Peterson, will be Chiefs owner Clark Hunt’s director of the team’s football operations.

The Chiefs made the announcement official today and plan on a press conference with Pioli for Wednesday.

“We are very excited to welcome Scott to the Chiefs,” Hunt said in a statement on the team’s website. “With his proven track record of success, Scott is the finest player personnel executive in the NFL, and we look forward to his leadership in building a championship organization.”

The Patriots understood that losing Pioli to another organization would happen at some point.  After Pioli’s understudy Thomas Dimitroff left last year to take over the Atlanta Falcoms GM position, New England needed to prepare for the eventual departure of Pioli.  Patriots head coach knows that replacing Pioli will be no easy task.

"To sum up in words everything Scott Pioli has meant to this organization and to me personally would be difficult, if not impossible, Belichick said via a team statment. "From the day I met him, he has demonstrated a passion for football and respect for the game that is second to none."

Patriots owner Robert Kraft echoed Belichick’s sincere appreciate for a man who helped to build a thiree time worls champion in New England.

“Scott Pioli was an integral part of the many championships the New England Patriots have celebrated this decade and I would like to thank him for his countless contributions throughout the past nine seasons," Kraft said in his statement today. "On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, I wish Scott continued success in his new role and offer best wishes to his wonderful wife Dallas, and their beautiful daughter Mia. I think Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs have made a very wise hire.”

According to an ESPN report, Patriots director of Pro Personnel Nick Caserio will replace Pioli in New England.

Pioli finished his tenure in New England after nine seasons, having helped build a roster that won Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX, won the AFC Championship trophy four times (Named after Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt), and won the AFC East Division title six times.

Pioli’s experience spans 17 years from from Cleveland (1992-95), Baltimore (1996), the N.Y. Jets (1997-99) to .New England (2000-08).
