I was working out today ( don’t laugh) when I was overcome with regret. I had delivered a season preview of our Celtic broadcasts at the Comcast Sportsnet Celtics Media Luncheon and now I was thinking of things of I wish I had said.
I wish I had told the story about Tommy when I was in the hallway and heard "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!." I ran into the conference room to see if Tommy was okay. He was stretched out in a swivel chair with his head leaning back and his arms raised in the air. I asked him what was the matter. He did make a move and groaned " Tonight, we got Eddie F. Rush!" Eddie was not one of Tommy’s favorite officials. Come to think of it, Tommy dislikes all officials but he really dislikes Eddie F. Rush….as most Celtic fans do.
I did tell the story however of how during the playoffs Tommy would stand up take a deep breath and tell us he had to take a walk. He would walk around the building to cool off before watching the game again.
Without question, one of the funniest people I have ever met is Donny Marshall. He has everyone cracking up during commercial breaks. He can imitate every player in the league. Jason Kidd thought Donny was so funny when they played together that J-Kidd offered to bank roll a comedy career for Donny. He is also the best dressed man I know. His custom suits are never wrinkled and his head is always clean shaven with no excess hair above the neck anywhere. He is a little obsesive about it. Ten seconds before going on the air, he moves right next to me and looks directly into my ear. He then says," You better get that ear hair clipped. It’s disgusting." Where I come from the only time a barber touched your ear is when he trimmed a little off above the ear…NOT in it!
In case you don’t know Tommy will be in studio with me during road games and Donny will be with Mike. Then during home games Tommy will be at the Garden and Donny will be with me.
Yes, I did have my ear hair clipped. It’s hurts!
It feels like Christmas eve- everyone’s freaking out getting ready for an exciting Cs season. You and Tommy in the chair during road games will be hilarious- that guy is a relic, glad to hear he’ll be dragged around the country a little less.
And the banner presentation will be electric; such a great memory of last season that leads directly into a challenging run for repeat. I agree with you that this Celtics squad will be a little different, but has the potential to be better than last year’s team- and that has every Boston fan young and old giddy as all hell.
you, donny, tommy, mike and greg make a good mix on-air, and everyone at CSN seems pumped to kick this puppy off. cheers to the new season!
BTW the “3-man weave” on Celts pre-game live has to go. Your tech director kept cutting to shots of two smaller talking-head bubbles of Donny and Michael Holley, while a dominating bubble containing your silent image hovered overhead like a Czar moderator. First-game jitters for Cs AND producers haha
